The
Regiment
The Regiment was raised from the 10th US Military
District, which composed most of NC, and a small part of SC and TN. Several companies of the Regiment were
raised early in the war and sent to Canada for service. They saw little or no action. They camped
near Buffalo, NY in barracks built in 1812.
Seven men died of dysentery during this excursion, about Jan - March
1815 and are buried there. More
companies were raised mid-war which were called upon for scares on the coast,
as well as the Royal Marine attack on Ocracoke and Portsmouth. They garrisoned
Ft Hampton (Beaufort) and Ft Johnston (Southport) with the 7 NC Militia
regiments. In late 1814, they were sent
to support actions in the Louisiana area but were notified while in Alabama that
the battle of New Orleans had already occurred, so they turned around and went
home. Officers found of the regiments
include Capt Brittain, Capt Mitchell, Capt Nelson, Lt George Strother, and
Capt. Ratliff Boon
